Description:
Ugly people don't have feelings. They're not like everyone else. They don't notice if you stare at them and turn away. And if they did notice, it wouldn't hurt them. They're not like real people. Or that's what I used to think. Before I learned...After the car crash that leaves her best friend dead, Jenna is permanently scarred. She struggles to rebuild her life, but every stare in the street, every time she looks in the mirror, makes her want to retreat further from the world. Until she meets Ryan. Ryan's a traveller. When he and his mother moor their narrow boat on the outskirts of a village, she tells him this time it will be different. He doesn't believe her; he can't imagine why this place shouldn't be as unwelcoming as the rest. Until he meets Jenna. But as Jenna and Ryan grow closer, repercussions from the crash continue to reverberate through the community. And then a body is found...

I really enjoyed Skin Deep. It only took me a couple of days to read once I got started. I enjoyed the dual dialogue between Jenna and Ryan; it allowed a deeper insight into the live and relationships of the characters. Jenna hasn’t had the easiest year and wants to just forget everything but Ryan won’t let her, he makes her remember who she was and who she still can be. I liked Jenna character as she is strong but not in an over the top upfront way, her strength is an inner strength that nobody else can see. Ryan is the physical strength in the novel, he has the attitude and protective instinct that draws any girl in but also gives off a “keep away” vibe to those who would want to start trouble with those he cares about.

The twists in the novel are amazing. (I won’t give them away). They kept me reading to the point that I had to tear myself away from reading even to get food. I wanted to know what happened, I ended up setting myself a limit as to what time I could read to each night.

I would really recommend this for teen girls; it shows you that you don’t have to be conventionally pretty to be beautiful.
